Defending Potential Through Relationships

Bigs in BlueSM is a one-to-one mentoring program that connects youth with first responders in communities throughout the United States, building strong, trusting, lasting relationships. These relationships can help children develop into confident adults and help build stronger bonds between first responders and the families they serve.  Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley was one of the first affiliates in the country to pilot the Bigs in Blue initiative.

Regionally, the Bigs in Blue initiative seeks to bridge the connection between first responders and the families and children in our communities.  major areas of focus for the initiative include:

  1. engage first responders in one-to-one mentoring relationships with vulnerable youth
  2. provide career exploration experiences to children participating in a BBBS sponsored mentoring program
  3. engage in BBBS sponsored match activities and events in local communities on an ongoing basis
  4. provide a referral system for youth who have experienced traumatic events
  5. provide educational and safety education and resources to matches and families within the BBBS network
