This summer, BBBSMV is on a mission to recruit 25 new Big Brothers and Big Sisters through Project Starfish—a community-wide campaign inspired by the well-known Starfish Story.
The story reminds us that while one person can’t help every child waiting for a mentor, one person can change the life of one child. For each child matched with a caring adult, that one relationship can make all the difference.
There are currently 90 children in the Quad Cities Area waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister: 30 girls and 60 boys.
The goal? Recruit 25 new Bigs, reducing our waitlist by 28%.

The Story
Adapted from The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley
One day, a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?” The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they won’t make it.” “Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles of beach and thousands of starfish? You can’t make a difference!” After listening politely, the boy went down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said… “I made a difference for that one!”
