When Big Brothers Big Sisters launched the Peer to Peer Mentoring Club partnership at United Township High School, the goal was simple: to create a welcoming space where students could feel seen, supported, and connected to one another and to their school community. Over time, the club has grown into something deeply meaningful. Each week, students arrive as they are, sometimes quiet, sometimes energetic, sometimes unsure, and together we build trust, confidence, and connection with one another.
Peer to Peer Club offers students opportunities to connect through hands-on activities, team-building experiences, and open conversations about emotions, friendships, stress, and healthy decision-making. Students have volunteered together, participated in cooperative games, and engaged in hands-on activities that encourage thoughtful communication and active listening. While these moments may seem simple, they consistently open the door to deeper conversations and personal growth.
One of the greatest joys of Peer to Peer has been forming relationships with students and witnessing their growth over time. Students step into leadership in many ways, by leading discussions, supporting peers, or showing up with consistency and care.
BBBS staff and program leader, Cat Roth, says, “I’ve seen confidence build, empathy strengthen, and a genuine sense of belonging take root.” Peer to Peer Club is a reminder that positive change doesn’t have to be loud. Often, it begins with a student feeling heard, trying something new, or realizing they belong…and that’s where the real spark happens.
