Last fall, 84 volunteers spent their lunch hours connecting with over 90 Littles through Big for a Day events — playing games, sharing conversations, and giving students meaningful moments of belonging. Students walked away smiling and asking when their Big could return, while volunteers described the experience as simple, joyful, and impactful.
From these events, 32 people expressed interest in becoming a mentor, and 3 have completed interviews, with more Matches still in progress. While many expressed interest, we still need committed volunteers to take the next step — every Match creates a lasting impact for a child waiting for a mentor.
As we continue building on this momentum, we’re excited to share a meaningful update: Big for a Day is becoming The Big Experience.
This new name reflects what these events truly are — opportunities for community members to get an authentic snapshot of what it’s like to be a Big in our School-Based program. The Big Experience emphasizes connection, purpose, and the potential to spark a longer-term mentoring relationship. We hope that this name helps volunteers see the depth and impact behind what might begin with just 45 minutes spent with a student.
Thanks to Quad City Bank & Trust and Capriotti’s, our fall events created space for confidence, connection, and community — and sparked the beginning of real mentoring journeys.
As we look toward spring, we’re excited to continue offering The Big Experience and to welcome more volunteers ready to take the next step into ongoing mentoring roles.
