The BIG Experience
Big Brothers Big Sisters partners with local elementary schools to offer community members a meaningful opportunity to step into the role of a Big and experience the impact of mentoring firsthand.
Each BIG Experience session lasts about 90 minutes and includes welcoming introductions, lunch provided by BBBSMV (Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop), and a series of light activities and icebreakers that help volunteers and students get to know one another. Volunteers spend about an hour paired one-on-one with a student identified by their school as someone who would benefit from extra support, encouragement, and connection. The structure creates a unique space where personal, one-on-one moments unfold within a supportive group setting. It also mirrors our school-based mentoring program, where Bigs meet with their Littles for about 45 minutes during lunch or recess twice a month – and more often if they choose.
These events offer far more than a single volunteer opportunity. The BIG Experience is intentionally designed to show how meaningful relationships can grow through short, consistent interactions – and how flexible, accessible, and rewarding school-based mentoring can be.
At the conclusion of each session, BBBSMV staff share ways to stay involved, including the invitation to take the next step and become a Big. This experience is ideal for individuals who feel drawn to making a steady, ongoing impact in a child’s life and want to explore what a long-term mentoring relationship can look like.
The BIG Experience is made possible through collaboration with local elementary schools, including United Way’s United for Schools sites, helping us reach more students who benefit from caring, consistent mentors.
